Around lunch time
on his last day at work,
everyone gathered in the utility room
for cake – pineapple and cream.
(Pineapple and cream for retirements
and dark forest cakes for birthdays).
They clapped when he cut a slice
which he then bit into,
a tad self consciously.
Later, there was a function
to commemorate his 40 years of service,
where the manager gifted him
a shawl he’d never wear
and a watch that seemed to tell him,
he didn’t have much time left.
