One afternoon I had nothing to do and so…

I thought of you, I chewed my nails, I sang loudly, I sang softer than before and heard my voice “not bad, quite bad”, I made an egg, I read three sentences- average ones, I changed the sheets and pressed my fingers onto the embroidered flowers on the pillow covers and watched them bloom on my skin, I drank a tall glass of water and felt it course down my throat, I painted my nails electric blue, I sent my mother a joke and felt victorious when she got it, I thought of you again, I reasoned with a pigeon not to fly into my balcony, I poured tea into my cup and felt soothed by the sound of it reaching the bottom- the loveliest sound for those alone, I moisturised my cold feet and thought about Nivea cold cream and winters in Ambala, I thought about a day in 2003, I doodled my name thrice while trying to write down my grocery list- I’m out of eggs and butter now but look at me write my name down thrice as if it’s something special (maybe it is), I yawned and felt the music of that yawn- loud, round, faintly Carnatic some would argue, I looked out of the window and considered waving at a stranger but I was too shy, I played a song you’d sent me and I decided not to call you again. One afternoon I had nothing to do and so I did everything.
